* * *

My first memory is ready. The guy before me finishes telling of how his favourite sweater was lost by being buried in the sand at Lake Huron by his brother whom he’s hated ever since.

The doctor settles his saggy eyes upon me: “And you?”

“Marbles,” I say.

The group nods. Morris lowers his head as if he knew this all along.

“I’m looking into a bag of shiny glass I believe are priceless jewels.”

There’s a moment of respectful silence while everyone pretends to consider this. Morris pendulums his shoes over the brown carpet in satisfaction, squaring his conclusions away. The doctor scribbles a brief note, straightens his posture for his little end-of-the-session announcement.

“Okay. I think that was very illuminating for all of us. Perhaps now we should take a deep breath and think to ourselves about what all of this means.”

Then he closes his eyes and the rest of us do the same, as though joining him in a silent prayer.
